Refugees will not be citizens of new state Palestinian refugees will not become citizens of a new Palestinian state, according to Palestine’s ambassador to Lebanon. From behind a desk topped by a miniature model of Palestine’s hoped-for blue United Nations chair, Ambassador Abdullah Abdullah spoke to The Daily Star Wednesday about Palestine’s upcoming bid for U.N. statehood. The ambassador unequivocally says that Palestinian refugees would not become citizens of the sought for U.N.-recognized Palestinian state, an issue that has been much discussed. “They are Palestinians, that’s their identity,” he says. “But … they are not automatically citizens.” This would not only apply to refugees in countries such as Lebanon, Egypt, Syria and Jordan or the other 132 countries where Abdullah says Palestinians reside. Abdullah said that “even Palestinian refugees who are living in [refugee camps] inside the [Palestinian] state, they are still refugees. They will not be considered citizens.” Abdullah said that the new Palestinian state would “absolutely not” be issuing Palestinian passports to refugees. |

Palestinian media frequently publishes and broadcasts anti-Semitic sermons by Islamic religious leaders, while the Hamas-run Al-Aqsa TV shows programming for preschoolers that extolls hatred of Jews and suicide bombings, according to a 2009 State Department human rights report. Hamas: Obama will fail in forcing us to recognize Israel Hamas condemned U.S. President Barack Obama’s speech to AIPAC on Sunday, saying it will not recognize Israel despite U.S. demands. In his second Mideast speech, Obama reaffirmed U.S. support for Israel and called on the Gaza-rulers to recognize Israel’s right to exist, as well as free abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit. He also condemned the recent Fatah-Hamas reconciliation agreement. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri was quoted by Ma’an news agency as saying that Obama’s speech showed the U.S. government will continue « to support the occupation at the expense of the freedom of the Palestinian people. » Moreover, Abu Zuhri emphasized that the U.S. « will fail » in forcing Hamas « to recognize the occupation. » Hamas leader Ismail Radwan said that Obama gave in to the Israeli position at the expense of the Palestinian people and their rights. « It’s clear the Obama administration is working only to secure the safety of the Zionist entity… it’s clear the U.S. isn’t speaking about 1967 borders nor a Palestinian state, » Radwan said. |

Ottawa won’t back Obama’s Mideast peace proposal The Harper government is refusing to join the United States in calling for a return to 1967 borders as a starting point for Mideast peace, a position that has drawn sharp criticism from Canada’s staunch ally Israel. At a briefing ahead of the upcoming G8 summit in France, federal officials said the basis for the negotiations must be mutually agreed upon. Israel quickly rejected U.S. President Barack Obama’s proposal for the talks to be guided by the 1967 borders, with mutually agreed land swaps. “What the government of Canada supports is basically a two-state solution that is negotiated,” a senior federal official said. “If it’s border, if it’s others issues, it has to be negotiated, it cannot be unilateral action.” The Prime Minister’s director of communications, Dimitri Soudas, added that Canada’s position continues to be the search for a two-state solution. “No solution, ultimately, is possible without both parties sitting down, negotiating and agreeing on what that final outcome will look like,” he said. |

Black student association insulted when Israel called apartheid state Let’s see the “progressives” figure this one out. A U.S.-based alliance of black student organizations, the Vanguard Leadership Group, has run ads in the student newspapers on campuses where it’s active, calling for pro-Palestinian groups to stop calling Israel an apartheid state. In the ad, Vanguard writes to members of the group Students for Justice in Palestine, and asks that they “immediately stop referring to Israel as an apartheid society and to acknowledge that the Arab minority in Israel enjoys full citizenship with voting rights and representation in government.” They probably shouldn’t hold their breath on that one. Vanguard’s efforts aren’t likely to change the tenor of the debate in the Middle East, but that young black Americans, many of whom must still overcome genuine prejudice to reach their high goals, would stand up and call out the so-called progressives for their “deliberate misappropriation of words and flagrant mischaracterizations of Israel” is a welcome development. |

Goldstone: Israel didn’t target civilians Judge Richard Goldstone said that if Israel had cooperated with his UN-sanctioned fact-finding mission into Operation Cast Lead and if he had known then what he knows today, « the Goldstone Report would have been a different document, » especially its allegations of « possible war crimes » directed at Israel. In a Washington Post op-ed on Friday, Goldstone wrote that while Hamas clearly indiscriminately targeted civilians, subsequent Israeli investigations indicated that civilians « were not intentionally targeted as a matter of policy » by Israel. He lamented that Israel did not cooperate with his mission, as it would likely have influenced the Goldstone Report’s findings. Goldstone also slammed the United Nations Human Rights Council, which commissioned the report, saying that the original mandate given to him was « skewed against Israel. » While praising the IDF for following up on his report with « ‘lessons learned’ and policy changes, » he laments that « there has been no effort by Hamas in Gaza to investigate the allegations of its war crimes and possible crimes against humanity. » |

UNRWA scraps plan to teach Holocaust The UNRWA [United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees] director of operations in Jordan on Thursday said the agency will commit to teaching the curricula of host countries, shelving plans to include the Holocaust in school textbooks. On Wednesday, UNRWA teachers in the country threatened to escalate measures by staging work stoppages and strikes if the relief agency continues with a plan to include the Holocaust in school textbooks. A recent statement announcing the plan triggered a wave of protest among UNRWA Arab cadres in the five areas of operation – Jordan, Lebanon, theWest Bank, Gaza and Syria. In a statement issued March 13, the union said that teachers, students and their parents as well as all Palestinian refugees were shocked by the agency’s plans, describing them as “attempts to derail the relief agency from its main duty of providing humanitarian services to refugees”. The statement stressed that this topic, the Holocaust, should not be allowed to enter UNRWA schools in the five fields of operation. |

Le blocus a été mis en place en 2007, Israël a fait le ménage en 2008 avec l’Opération « cast lead » et depuis, le maintien du blocus a eu pour conséquence d’éliminer la quasi-totalité des tirs de roquettes et de mortiers.

Propagande ou incompétence ?
Selon Richard Hétu, les commandos israéliens à bord d’un hélicoptère ont tiré sur les passagers du Mavi Marmara avant de procéder à son abordage.
Il va de soi que cette affirmation n’est appuyée par aucune preuve.
Premièrement, les journalistes de la chaîne Al-Jazeera, présent à bord du Mavi Marmara, n’ont diffusé aucune image qui permet d’accréditer cette thèse.
Deuxièmement, dans la vidéo montrant l’abordage du Mavi Marmara à partir de l’hélicoptère, on voit immédiatement les islamistes présents à bord se ruer sur les soldats israéliens pour les battre sauvagement à coup de barre de fer. On ne voit aucun des agresseurs tomber sous les balles ni même chercher à fuir des tirs qui auraient été dirigés contre eux.
Bref, il n’existe aucun fait pour accréditer les faits allégués. Si Richard Hétu avait bien fait son travail, il serait parvenu à la même conclusion.

Vivre à Gaza 
Le blocus israélien dirigé contre Gaza aurait fait de ce territoire un « camp de concentration » et il serait à l’origine d’un désastre humanitaire. C’est du moins la version des gauchistes.
Mais dans la réalité, voici comment on vit à Gaza et au Darfour…

Gaza est probablement le premier « camp de concentration » de l’histoire de l’humanité avec des écrans plats, des cafés internet et des boutiques qui débordent d’aliments, on est très loin de la réalité du Darfour… Pendant que l’ONU perd son temps à dénoncer le blocus israélien, des gens souffrent véritablement ailleurs, mais ils sont contraints de le faire en silence parce que les Palestiniens ont le monopole de la souffrance. Ce qui compte pour l’ONU et les médias ce n’est pas de protéger les innocents, mais plutôt de diaboliser Israël.

De voir les Nation-Unis s’acharner sur la seule terre de liberté du Moyen-Orient, c’est la démonstration la plus éloquente de l’échec de cette organisation.
Autrement, comment peut-on justifier le fait qu’Israël ait été l’objet d’un plus grand nombre de résolutions que le total cumulé par: le Soudan, l’Iran, la Corée du Nord, le Myanmar, le Turkménistan, Cuba, le Sierra Leone, l’Ouzbékistan, la Lybie, l’Arabie Saoudite, la Chine, la Russie et la Syrie…
Le copier-coller journalistique 
Vincent Marissal n’a pas aimé la réaction de Stephen Harper suite à l’arraisonnement par Israël d’un navire affrété par une organisation terroriste.
Vincent Marissal reproche au premier ministre la tiédeur de sa réaction dans laquelle il a affirmé: « Nous cherchons à obtenir tous les renseignements nécessaires afin de découvrir ce qui s’est vraiment passé ». Bref, Stephen Harper a eu la réaction que tout bon journaliste aurait dû avoir; avant de se prononcer, il faut avoir tous les faits. Vu le peu d’éthique de nos journalistes, il n’est pas étonnant que cette réaction horripile nos médias. Ici, quand il est question d’Israël, les journalistes font du copier-coller: Israéliens = méchants, Palestiniens = bons, fin de l’histoire et au diable les faits et la recherche de vérité.
Au lieu de critiquer Stephen Harper, Vincent Marissal aurait plutôt dû le remercier pour la leçon de journalisme qu’il a servi aux médias.
Il y a quelques semaines, un sous-marin nord-coréen a torpillé sans avertissement un navire sud-coréen qui naviguait dans ses eaux territoriales provoquant la mort de 46 personnes. Bien sûr, comme les Nord-coréens ne sont pas juifs, personne ne s’est vraiment indigné…
Récemment, le gouvernement japonais a adopté une résolution l’autorisant à arraisonner et inspecter les navires nord-coréens en eau internationale. Bien sûr, comme les Japonais ne sont pas juifs, personne ne s’est vraiment indigné…
Voici un excellent exemple d’un journaliste honorable, nul besoin de préciser qu’il n’est pas Québécois:
Légitime défense
Selon nos bons médias, Israël aurait attaqué un convoi d’aide humanitaire acheminé vers Gaza par des pacifistes… La réalité est tout autre.
Premièrement, il faut savoir que ce convoi a été organisé par l’IHH, une organisation turque extrémiste. L’ IHH a un long historique de collaboration avec des terroristes islamistes. Lors du procès d’Ahmed Ressam, on a appris que cette organisation a, depuis Montréal, été impliquée dans l’organisation d’un complot terroriste d’Al-Qaeda visant l’aéroport de Los Angeles. Les services de sécurité français ont aussi mis en évidence que l’IHH était impliqué dans le financement et le trafic d’armes destinées à des groupes terroristes affiliés à Al-Qaeda. D’ailleurs, des pacifistes à bord du navire de l’IHH ont appelé au massacre des Juifs juste avant leur départ.
Bref, c’est à ce genre de racaille que les forces israéliennes ont dû composer.
Malgré tout, l’armée israélienne a décidé de jouer fair-play. Avant de procéder à l’abordage, on a invité le convoi maritime à accoster au port maritime de Hashdod:
Devant le refus de coopérer de la flotte, l’armée israélienne a finalement procédé à l’abordage, mais toujours pour être fair-play, les soldats ont initialement utilisé des fusils de type « paintball ». Et c’est à ce moment qu’on a pu observer une sauvagerie typiquement pacifiste…

Pour les Arabes d’Israël il n’y a pas d’apartheid

Si Israël est un État d’apartheid, que fait donc cet Arabe à la Knesset ? L’apartheid ne signifie-t-il pas qu’une personne comme ce membre de la Knesset ne pourrait même pas se présenter à une élection ? Heureusement, les citoyens arabes peuvent fréquenter les mêmes plages, restaurants et centres d’achat que les Juifs dans cet État d’ “apartheid”. De plus, ils peuvent briguer une élection et même compter pour la première fois un ministre [Ghaleb Majadlah] au sein du gouvernement.
Dans cet État d’ “apartheid”, la communauté arabe jouit d’une presse libre qui fait l’envie de nombreux Palestiniens en Cisjordanie et dans la bande de Gaza. Ironiquement, un journal de Nazareth ou de Haïfa accrédité par Israël jouit d’une plus grande liberté que les médias contrôlés par le Hamas et le Fatah, ainsi que par la plupart des dictatures arabes corrompues.
Ironiquement, ce membre de la Knesset qui se plaint de l’apartheid jouit de plus de privilèges que la plupart des Juifs et des Arabes en Israël. À titre de parlementaire, il est en droit de faire plusieurs choses qu’un citoyen ordinaire ne peut pas grâce à l’immunité dont il jouit en tant qu’élu.
Son immunité parlementaire lui permet d’entrer dans des zones interdites aux citoyens ordinaires juifs et arabes. Ce membre de la Knesset, par exemple, se rend dans les territoires contrôlés par l’Autorité palestinienne qui depuis plusieurs années sont interdits aux citoyens israéliens ordinaires.
Ce membre de Knesset peut parfois violer la loi en visitant des pays “hostiles” tels que la Syrie et le Liban ou en tenant des réunions publiques avec les dirigeants du Hamas et du Hezbollah. Il est vrai que la communauté arabe en Israël est confrontée depuis longtemps à de vrais problèmes qui doivent être abordés avec urgence. Le problème central demeure la discrimination de la part des classes dirigeantes, en particulier en matière d’emploi et d’infrastructures, ainsi que dans l’allocation de fonds et de terres publics.
Néanmoins, les citoyens arabes ne luttent pas pour se séparer d’Israël. Plutôt, ils luttent en faveur de l’intégration, de l’égalité, de services améliorés et d’un meilleur traitement. Les citoyens arabes sont heureux de vivre en Israël où ils ont toujours compté une moyenne de 10 représentants à la Knesset.
En dénonçant Israël comme un État d’apartheid, le membre de la Knesset qui s’est envolé pour l’Amérique du Nord assiste en fait ceux qui cherchent à éviter le véritable problème : la discrimination. En se concentrant sur la question de l’apartheid, il détourne l’attention du vrai problème et trahit les intérêts de son propre peuple.
Les citoyens arabes d’Israël aimeraient voir leurs représentants siéger au parlement et lutter pour l’égalité et de meilleurs services pour le secteur arabe au lieu de participer à la Semaine contre l’apartheid israélien dans une université à Ottawa ou à Toronto.
On comprend mal comment la participation d’un membre arabe de la Knesset à la Semaine contre l’apartheid israélien sur un campus universitaire aux États-Unis ou au Canada sert la cause des 1,4 million de citoyens arabes d’Israël. En fait, ceci pourrait nuire aux citoyens arabes et à leur lutte contre la discrimination.
La présence du membre de la Knesset dans ces campus fait le jeu de ces Israéliens qui accusent les citoyens arabes, dont la majorité demeurent loyaux à l’État, de former une “cinquième colonne” et un “ennemi interne”. Plus les Juifs craindront leurs concitoyens arabes, plus ces derniers souffriront.
Le meilleur moyen de miner des radicaux comme ce membre de la Knesset est d’offrir aux citoyens arabes des services égaux et de pleins droits. Certes, Israël n’est pas un État d’apartheid. Mais Israël doit se réveiller et commencer à aborder sérieusement les problèmes de la minorité arabe avant qu’il ne soit trop tard.

The meaning is clear: Israel is a state where political and civil rights are withheld on the basis of race and race alone. This is not the case. The Israel of today and the South Africa of yesterday have almost nothing in common. In South Africa, the minority white population harshly ruled the majority black population. Nonwhites were denied civil rights, and in 1958, they were even deprived of citizenship. In contrast, Israeli Arabs, about one-fifth of the country, have the same civil and political rights as do Israeli Jews. Arabs sit in the Knesset and serve in the military, although most are exempt from the draft. Whatever this is — and it looks suspiciously like a liberal democracy — it cannot be apartheid. Yet Israel’s critics continue to hurl the apartheid epithet at the state when they have to know, or they ought to know, that it is a calumny. Interestingly, they do not use it for Saudi Arabia, which maintains as perfect a system of gender apartheid as can be imagined — women can’t even drive, never mind vote — or elsewhere in the Arab world, where Palestinians sometimes have fewer rights than they do in Israel. |

Help, not hate Since last fall, the federal Conservative government has been withdrawing taxpayer funding from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that use their grants to take sides against Israel in the Middle East conflict. Now comes word that last week, Ottawa told the United Nations it would no longer fund the world body’s Palestinian refugee agency. From now on, Canadian aid to Palestinians will be directed to specific projects. We will no longer give lump-sum aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNWRA), since most of that money simply goes straight into the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) general treasury, where it might be used for humanitarian projects or might be used to arm and train terrorists. Although UNWRA has long been a biased player in the Arab-Israeli conflict, it is seldom criticized for its incitement of anti-Israeli hatred and violence by Palestinians. It has funded textbooks that deny the right of Israel to exist and paid teachers who call on Palestinian children to push the Jewish state into the sea. It harbours radical Islamists and anti-Semites on its payroll and was even caught in 2004 using its own ambulances to ferry terrorists away from Israeli sites they had just attacked. But most politicians and journalists consider UNWRA to be sacrosanct. Too many swallow whole the agency’s assurances that it is not involved in promoting terrorism and anti-Israeli sentiments in the West Bank and Gaza. Criticism of it always elicits howls that UNWRA’s mission is only to care for four million refugees in 59 camps and promote peace and understanding in the region. So rather than get dragged into a public relations war with the UN and its acolytes, Stephen Harper informed UNWRA and the PA that from now on, Canadian aid would be earmarked to specific projects, chosen by Ottawa, such as food aid. |

Funding for leftist group to be cut The Conservative government is set to slash millions of dollars in funding to Alternatives, a Montreal-based nongovernmental organization associated with a number of left-leaning causes and which has been critical of Canada’s involvement in the war in Afghanistan. Alternatives was founded in 1994 « to foster social justice, participatory democracy and equal relations between North and South, » according to its 2007-08 annual report. The report shows that it received $2.4-million from the Canadian International Development Agency and a further $1.4-million from other federal departments. Alternatives runs a number of programs, in Canada and abroad, including environmental, communications, peace promotion and « social justice » programs. Ottawa is understood to be particularly unhappy about an education camp the NGO organized in August 2008. The event, at Saint-Alphonse de Rodriguez in Quebec, featured « 500 motivated militants » invited from countries such as Lebanon, Iraq, « Palestine » and Venezuela. Sources said the government is also concerned that Alternatives’ board includes supporters of Hezbollah and Hamas, such as Ali Mallah, vice-president of the Canadian Arab Federation. Tom Quiggin, who has 20 years’ experience in the Canadian intelligence community and is now a board advisor for Global Brief magazine, said he has noted an increasing convergence between the hard left and supporters of organizations such as Hamas and Hezbollah, which have been declared terrorist organizations by the Canadian government. |

Rights Watchdog, Lost in the Mideast By Robert L. Bernstein, the chairman of Human Rights Watch from 1978 to 1998. As the founder of Human Rights Watch, its active chairman for 20 years and now founding chairman emeritus, I must do something that I never anticipated: I must publicly join the group’s critics. Human Rights Watch had as its original mission to pry open closed societies, advocate basic freedoms and support dissenters. But recently it has been issuing reports on the Israeli-Arab conflict that are helping those who wish to turn Israel into a pariah state. The Middle East is populated by authoritarian regimes with appalling human rights records. Yet in recent years Human Rights Watch has written far more condemnations of Israel for violations of international law than of any other country in the region. Israel is home to at least 80 human rights organizations, a vibrant free press, a democratically elected government and a judiciary that frequently rules against the government. Meanwhile, the Arab and Iranian regimes rule over some 350 million people, and most remain brutal, closed and autocratic, permitting little or no internal dissent. The plight of their citizens who would most benefit from the kind of attention a large and well-financed international human rights organization can provide is being ignored as Human Rights Watch’s Middle East division prepares report after report on Israel. Human Rights Watch has lost critical perspective on a conflict in which Israel has been repeatedly attacked by Hamas and Hezbollah, organizations that go after Israeli citizens and use their own people as human shields. Only by returning to its founding mission and the spirit of humility that animated it can Human Rights Watch resurrect itself as a moral force in the Middle East and throughout the world. If it fails to do that, its credibility will be seriously undermined and its important role in the world significantly diminished. |
