La prochaine fois qu’un gauchiste vous dira que les pétrolières reçoivent du « BS corporatif » en quantité disproportionnée, montrez-lui les chiffres suivants, produits par le Congressional Budget Office, un organisme indépendant et non partisan qui est chargé d’analyser les politiques économiques du gouvernement américain.
Les subventions aux pétrolières ont augmenté avec Jimmy Carter pour ensuite être réduites par Ronald Reagan et George H.W. Bush. Ensuite, de Bill Clinton à Barack Obama en passant par George W. Bush, elles sont restées relativement stables. Par contre, les subventions aux énergies vertes ont explosé sous les présidences de George W. Bush et Barack Obama.
Depuis le début des années 2000, les pétrolières ont reçu du gouvernement 44,1 milliards de dollars contre 77,9 milliards pour les énergies vertes. Autrement dit, pour chaque 1$ reçu par les pétrolières, les énergies vertes ont reçu 1,77$, presque le double.
De plus, garder en tête que le graphique ne tient pas compte de la proportion de l’énergie fournie par chaque secteur. Par exemple en 2011, les énergies vertes ont reçu 80% des subventions malgré que ce secteur ne soit responsable que de la production de 8% de l’énergie. Inversement, les pétrolières ont reçu 15% des subventions et elles ont produit 38% de l’énergie utilisée aux États-Unis. En tenant compte de l’énergie produite, les subventions aux énergies renouvelables sont encore plus disproportionnées.
De plus, on peut se poser des questions sur l’utilité de ces subventions… Voici l’évolution de l’indice RENIXX, un indice boursier qui tient compte de la valeur des 30 plus grosses compagnies oeuvrant dans le secteur des énergies renouvelables:
N’importe qui peut constater que les industries associées aux énergies vertes se sont complètement effondrées depuis 2008, et ce, malgré les milliards en subvention ! D’ailleurs selon une étude réalisée en Espagne, pays qui a été un chef de file dans les énergies renouvelables, pour chaque emploi subventionné qui est créé dans les énergies vertes, 2,2 emplois sont perdus dans les autres secteurs de l’économie!
Maintenant, vous savez quoi répondre quand la gauche vous parlera des subventions aux méchantes pétrolières !

The Koch brothers, Charles and David, are the billionaire owners of Koch Industries, and two of the most obstinate climate change deniers out there.
It actually turns out that they will stop at nothing to try and dirty the reputation of climate science, even going as far as fixing renewable energy studies to provide proof to their cause.
Even when Richard Muller, a Berkeley physicist, reported earlier in the year that his 3 year long, Koch-funded investigation proved that global warming did exist, that human activity was largely responsible, and that it is having a far worse effect on the planet than commonly thought; the Koch’s just ignore the results and focused on another study that shows climate change is fake.
Two of the Koch brothers most powerful anti-climate science weapons, are the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and the Heartland Institute, both funded by Koch organisations, and both renowned for their anti-climate change stances.

Under the direction of the Koch brothers ALEC, a lobby group, played a key role in derailing plans to setup the Midwest Greenhouse Gas Reduction Accord, a six state cap and trade agreement. Then, there is the Heartland Institute, probably best known for its billboard that it erected in Chicago last May which compared supporters of global warming with ‘Unabomber’ domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski.
Then just recently both organisations have been involved in a campaign against the new Electricity Freedom Act, which looks to increase utilities use of renewable energy and is already used in 29 states, claiming that it dramatically inflates electricity prices.
The reality is that electricity prices in the 29 states where the model legislation is already in effect, has not increased, in fact if anything it has decreased a bit.
When ALEC or the Heartland institute want to make a point, or release an attacking statement against renewable energy or climate change, they usually turn to studies commissioned by the American Tradition Institute, and State Policy Network, both of which are funded by the Koch brothers.
In a recent study undertaken by the Beacon Hill Institute, economist Michael Head admitted to the Washington Post that he and his colleagues manipulated the data to try and influence the results. Not necessarily anything huge, but just by leaving out certain key figures they can make the results seem to prove climate change sceptics when in fact they disprove them.

Germany’s solar experiment collapses
Germany once prided itself on being the “photovoltaic world champion,” doling out generous subsidies — totalling more than US$130-billion, according to research from Germany’s Ruhr University — to citizens to invest in solar energy. But now the German government is vowing to cut the subsidies sooner than planned, and to phase out support over the next five years. What went wrong?
According to Der Spiegel, even members of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s staff are now describing the policy as a massive money pit. Philipp Rösler, Germany’s Minister of Economics and Technology, has called the spiralling solar subsidies a “threat to the economy.”
Indeed, despite the massive investment, solar power accounts for only about 0.3% of Germany’s total energy. This is one of the key reasons why Germans now pay the second-highest price for electricity in the developed world (exceeded only by Denmark, which aims to be the “world wind-energy champion”).
Germany’s experiment with subsidizing inefficient solar technology has failed. As even many German officials would probably attest, governments elsewhere cannot afford to repeat the same mistake.

If the figure turns out to be anything like that of tight “fracked” oil from the North Dakota Bakken (6:1 or less, according to one estimate), then shale gas production will continue only as long as it can be subsidized by higher-EROEI conventional gas and oil.
In any case, it’s already plain that the “resource pessimists” have once again gotten the big picture just about right. And once again we suffer the curse of Cassandra—though we’re correct, no one listens. I keep hoping that if we’re right often enough the curse will lift. We’ll see.

Apart from the boom in US production, and a strong currency, Alberta’s oil sands players are also threatened by escalating costs according to a recent report by Wood Mackenzie that shows « break-even costs for building new steam-driven projects are in the $65-$70 a barrel range and mining developments need at least $90-$100 oil. »
Existing project can still make money at $45 a barrel and at today’s prices SAGD or steam-assisted gravity drainage projects still stand a chance to get off the drawing board, but a full fifth of oil sands projects – those that rely on conventional mining methods – are not nearly viable.
Just today a Canadian think-tank came up with new numbers to show the impact of the oil sands on Canada’s economy:
Alberta’s oil sands will be responsible for creating 880,000 person-years of employment.
Beyond the employment impacts, oil sands-related investment is expected to generate government revenues of $79.4 billion ($45.3 billion in federal revenues and $34.1 for provinces) between 2012 and 2035, on an inflation-adjusted basis.
If the current trend persists these figures may still prove far too optimistic.

A growing number of industry, academic and environmental experts say that while drilling can cause water contamination, that can be avoided by proper use of cement seals and other safety measures.
