Le remarquable historien de l’économie, Angus Maddison, est décédé le 24 avril dernier. Angus Madison s’est notamment illustré en étudiant le passé économique de l’homme, démontrant ainsi l’énorme chemin parcouru depuis 2000 ans…
De l’an 1 à 1900, la population mondiale a augmenté de 592%. De l’an 1900 à 2009, la population mondiale a augmenté de 333%.
De l’an 1 à 1900, le PIB/habitant a augmenté de 170%. De l’an 1900 à 2009, le PIB/habitant a augmenté de 511%.
La pauvreté a longtemps constitué une condition de vie « normale » pour l’homme. Le phénomène de croissance économique, qui a permis de sortir l’humanité de la misère la plus abjecte, reste un phénomène très récent et c’est en voyant tout le chemin parcouru que l’on réalise à quel point la mondialisation et la libéralisation des économies ont été des outils puissants qui ont permis de renverser près de 2 000 ans de pauvreté.

German voters deliver poll blow to Merkel amid discontent over aid to Greece Chancellor Angela Merkel appeared to have been dealt a political body blow on tonight when her Christian Democratic party recorded its worst ever result in crucial region elections. Exit polls in North Rhine Westphalia — Germany’s most populous region with 18 million inhabitants — suggested that the Christian Democrats won barely 34 per cent of the vote and were like to be toppled from the regional government. Plainly the party has had to pay for some of the popular discontent about Chancellor Merkel’s aid package for Greece. Since agreeing an aid package for Greece a week ago, the Chancellor’s personal popularity has plunged by 6 percentage points. The Christian Democrats, even when taking unpopular actions, could always count on the personal popularity of Ms Merkel to buoy up their results. That is now fast crumbling. |
